Born April 5, 1838, Ashe County, N.C., Larkin Ashley, was the son of William R. Ashley and Martha Margaret "Mary" Roten Ashley.

Larkin Ashley married Sarah Osborne July 1, 1859, in Ashe County, N.C.

Wife: Sarah Osborne Ashley

They had seven sons; then they had two daughters.

Sons of Larkin and Sarah, were David, Elihu "Hugh", John L., William E., Thomas Larkin, Milton "Milt" Jerome, and James Ashley.

Son: Elihu "Eli or Hugh" Ashley

Son: David "Dave" A. Ashley

Son: Thomas "Tom" Larkin Ashley

Son: Milton "Milt" Gerome Ashley

Son: John L. Ashley

Son: James "Jim" Ashley

Son: William E. Ashley

The first daughter born, was Martha Alice "Mattie" Ashley Isaacs.

Daughter: Martha Alice Ashley Isaacs.

The youngest child of Larkin and Sarah, was a daughter, Sarah Ann "Dollie" Ashley Holtsclaw.

Daughter: Sarah Ann "Dolly" Ashley Holtsclaw

When Larkin's wife, Sarah, passed away from breast cancer, Martha Alice then took care of her younger sister, Sarah Ann, known as "Dollie". She also, took over household chores as for the remainder of her siblings still living in the household and her Father. I was her Grandaughter and grew up nearby, so I heard of this from my Grandmother. She learned responsibilities, as this, at a very young age of only about eight or nine years old.

* Larkin Ashley served in the Civil War.

Larkin and Sarah with thier family lived in Ashe County, N.C. until sometime between 1870 and 1880, they moved to Avery County, N.C; with then Sarah Osborne Ashley, dying with breast cancer, in 1890.

Sometime afterwards, Larkin then remarried, to Nancy Loving. They had no children. Little is known about Nancy Loving.

In Linville, Avery County, N.C.,on February 27, 1915, Larkin Ashley, died at the age of 76.

* FOLLOW UP - CHILDREN

At least four of the sons, Elihu "Hugh" Ashley, David "Dave" Ashley, Thomas "Tom" Larkin Ashley, and John L. Ashley, later moved out West, Oregon and Washington, with then dying out there.

A son, Milton Gerome (or Jerome)Ashley, also, went West for a very short while, but did come back to his home state of N.C., where he died in Avery County.

James "Jim" Ashley, a son, died in Carter County, Tennessee.

William E. Ashley,was another son; at the present time being, I do not know what happened with him.

A daughter, Martha Alice "Mattie" Ashley Isaacs, resided in Western N.C., with living for a short while in Carter County, Tn., and then the remainder of her life, she lived a bit south of her birth county, until her passing.

The youngest of the children, a daughter, Sarah Ann "Dollie" Isaacs Holtsclaw contiued to live close to the same area as being born, all her life, there in the mountains, foothills of the Blue Ridge, Avery County, N.C.

* A brother of Larkin Ashley, was Calvin Ashley. A daughter of Calvin's and his wife, Cynthia Greene Ashley, was Geneva Ashley Smith.

* Grandson: John Ashley. He was the son of James "Jim" Ashley.
