He was married to Alice C. Fortier on July 1, 1961. They had three children: Keith D., Tim W., and Chris M. Donnie grew up and worked in East Grand Forks, Minnesota. He was living in Warroad, MN, at the time of his death.
He died July 3, 2002 at Roseau, Minnesota, at age 64. He is buried at the Nisbet Cemetery, near Mallory, Minnesota
