JAMES G. ADKINS, 82, of Barboursville, WV, passed away Thursday, August 18, 2011, in St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 21, 2011, at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, with Pastor Allen Stewart officiating. Burial will be in Ridgelawn Memorial Park. Jim was born October 13, 1928, in Huntington, WV, a son of the late Martin "Coony" & Ella Mae Adkins. He began his career with C & O Railway at age 15, going to school during the day and taking the train in the evening to Peach Creek, WV, to work as a dispatcher. His career with the railroad spanned 43 years, retiring in June 1987 as Chief Train Dispatcher for the Huntington division. Jim was a member of Highlawn Baptist Church; Chapter #89 O.E.S.; Western Star Lodge #11 A.F. & A.M.; 32nd Degree Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, Beni Kedem Temple Shrine of Charleston; Board of Directors for the Huntington Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Employees Federal Credit Union for 25 years: and a Kentucky Colonel. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Betty Jo Isaacs Adkins, on December 10, 2009; six brothers: Robert, Frank, Raymond, Charles, Van Linden and Maxwell Adkins and one sister, Leta Harper. He is survived by his daughter, Carolyn Adkins Regan; a special son-in-law, Patrick Regan; two grandsons, Matthew James Regan and Sean Patrick Regan all of Milton; a sister-in-law, Mattie Adkins of Maryland; several nieces and nephews including Doris Cupp of Lesage and Bobbie Adkins of Alabama; and a dear family friend, Patti Smith of Milton, who was his daughter in kindness. Jim never had an unkind word to say and will live on in the lives of those who knew and loved him. The family would like to thank the CVICU at St. Mary's Medical Center for their tremendous support during this time and also thank the nurses and PT department at Heartland of Riverview. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to The American Diabetes Association or The American Heart Association.
