Mary Jane was the only child of John and Mary White. Her mother had several miscarriages and when she was pregnant with Mary Jane she returned home to New Edinburgh, Nova Scotia where she remained in bed throughout the pregnancy. Shortly after her birth she returned to West Concord, Massachusetts.
