Lonnie was born the son of a sharecropper in Forest LA. His family moved Richton MS where he grew up. He dropped out of school at 14 and went to work. He bought a guitar and learned to play. He joined the US Air Force as soon as he was able. He began his music career playing in clubs near where his was stationed. After the service, after being discharged in Michigan he got a disc jockey job at WSDC in Marine City MI. He also recorded several records and performed at local dances.
