Joseph Conant Avery was born in Tunkhannock, Wyoming Co., Pennsylvania to Cyrus and Lydia Marcy Avery in 1817. They immigrated to Oregon and became one of the first white families to settle in what is now Corvallis, Oregon arriving in 1845. He settled near what is now Avery Park. He first named the new city Maryville but to avoid confusion with Marysville, California he renamed the town Corvallis.
In the winter of 1847-48 Joseph C. Avery began to lay out the community now known as Corvallis. The first lots were sold about 1849. Joseph C. Avery was the first owner of the site of Corvallis. He died in 1876. Avery made up the name Corvallis by compounding Latin words meaning heart of the valley. The post office was established January 8, 1850, with J.C. Avery as postmaster.
Joseph Avery was married 13 March, 1841 to Martha Marsh in Stark, Illinois. Children were Gertrude, Chatham, Charles, Arthur, Punderson, Florence, Frances, George, James & Napoleon. Several of the children died young.
