Albert was the son of Robert Warren Gardner and Julia Smith Yarbrough. He was the twin brother of Alma Ailius Gardner, who married Emma Catherine Atkinson.

He married Myrl Eddith Gregg, daughter of Carlton Lafayette Gregg and Annie Josephine Stewart 29 July 1914 in Woodson, Throckmorton Co., TX.
Albert and Myrl were the parents of eight children.
