Tommy Fred, 57

Tommy Merle Fred, 57 of Merna, passed away April 3, 2012. Tommy was born Sept. 16, 1954, at Broken Bow, to Alvie and I. Dee Fred. He lived his first year of life on the Upstream Ranch moving in succession from the Nicklos Ranch and finally to the Lazy J-C Charolais ranch, where he currently lived, north of Callaway.
Tommy attended Homeward Trails Bible camp in 1964, and God convicted him of his need for a Savior. He gave his life to Jesus Christ at that camp and committed his life to following His Lord and it changed his life forever. He and his mother, Dee, were baptized in the Middle Loup River with a believer's baptism shortly thereafter. Tommy became a member of the Gideon's following his father's death in 1974. He attended Cliff Union Church, and later Broken Bow Berean church and was involved in numerous Bible studies and church events.
Tommy began school at District 151 Sunshine one-room schoolhouse. Later he moved to Anselmo-Merna High where he was involved in football, basketball, and music. He graduated from there in May 1972.
From there he attended North Platte Community College graduating in May 1974 with a degree in Building Construction. After graduation Tommy took over the ranch at age 19, after his father's death.
Tommy was active in several organizations, including the National Charolais Association, Nebraska Cattlemen's Association, and the Broken Bow One Box Gun Club. He showed his cattle at the Nebraska State Fair, Ak-sar-ben, and the Denver Stock Show. He was a 10- year 4-H member.
Tommy is survived by his mother, I. Dee Fred (Story); sister, Penny Dee Douglas (husband Fred); aunts Irene Clark and Dianna Fred; niece, Jessica L. Mucci (husband Jerad); great-niece, Anastasia Mucci; nephews, Ian Douglas, Robert Douglas, Nathaniel Douglas and numerous cousins and friends.
Tommy was preceded in death by his father, Alvie Fred; paternal grandparents, Jim and Mamie Fred; maternal grandparents, Omer and Nellie Story, and numerous aunts and uncles.
Funeral services were Tuesday, April 10, at the Berean Church in Broken Bow with the Rev. Larry DeMoss officiating. Burial was in the Broken Bow Cemetery with Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers family requests memorials be given to ministries designated by the family.
