Donald J. Taylor, 82, of LeMars, Iowa, passed away Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, at Methodist hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. Memorial services were held at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars. Military rites will be in Hillside Cemetery, Merrill, Iowa, conducted by the American Legion Post 125 of Merrill.
Donald James Taylor was born July 10, 1922, in Iowa and was adopted by James Irwin and Mary (Howe) Taylor. He was raised and educated in the Merrilll area and graduated from Merrill High School in 1939. He would later attend college at Westmar College in LeMars and major in music.
He proudly served in country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He serviced aircrafts and played in the Army Air Corps Band. He attained the rank of sergeant prior to his honorable discharge. Following his military service, he returned to the Merrill area where he farmed.
He married Bernice Acord in July 22, 1947. He also worked in Merrill where he drove a tank truck for Branum Oil Co. He retired and moved to LeMars in 1987. They had 4 children.
He was an active member of the American Legion Post 125. He held numerous offices with the American Legion on the local, state, and national level throughout the country. He was also a member of the Eagles Club in LeMars.
He will long be remembered for all his recitations of "The Grand Old Flag."
