Dr Oriana Russell "Orie" Moon Andrews
Birth: Aug. 11, 1834
Scottsville
Albemarle County
Virginia, USA
Death: Dec. 26, 1883
Scottsville
Albemarle County
Virginia, USA

Dr Oriana Moon was raised a pampered daughter of a wealthy businessman, Edward Harris Moon. She was born and raised at Viewmont her fathers estate. Her father was an unusual man in that not only did he fill his library with an impressive collection of literature and hire the best tutors to educate his sons, his daughters were given the same education. An unusual situation in those days. Ladies were trained in fine art, fancy needlework and manners and domestic talents. Orie had an interest in medicine and was accepted at The Quaker run Female Medical College of Pennsylvania. After writing her thesis on the relationship between cardiac and pulmonary diseases, Orie was awarded her Doctor of Medicine in 1857.

In 1858 Orie traveled to the Holy Land with her uncle who was a missionary and physician. She returned to Viewmont in 1859 after 14 months.

When the Civil War broke out she offered her services and was after some effort assigned to a ward at Charlottesville General Hospital which included buildings converted for that purpose at the University of Virginia. The wounded from Bull Run filled the hospital and nearby homes. While there she met another young physician from Alabama, Dr. John S. Andrews. His brother Robert had been wounded in the hand, but was also suffering from typhoid. Dr Andrews consulted with Orie, but though they struggled to save him, he died several days later.

Orie discovered that Johns other brother had died from wounds a few days earlier at Bull Run and had been laid to rest near the battlefield, as John had no money to send his body back to Alabama. Orie gave John the funds to return his brothers body to Florence, Alabama. After his brothers funeral he returned to Virginia. Orie had fallen ill and was recovering at Viewmont. He went to repay her kind loan. A friendship developed and soon deepened into love. Dr. Williams and Orie were married on November 28, 1861

Their story is sometimes difficult and tragic. They practiced medicine together for the remainder of the marriage and had a great love for one another. Orie suffered from a heart ailment and finally succumbed on December 26, 1883.
