FORT DEFIANCE William Lowell "W.L." Batten, 52, of Fort Defiance died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007, in a truck accident in Hagerstown, Md. He was born Jan. 26, 1955, in Roanoke, and was a son of Patricia (Lambert) Wigfield of Boones Mill and the late William Lawrence Batten.

He worked as a truck driver for William Edwards in Verona. He graduated from Turner Ashby High School, Class of 1973.

He was united in marriage Oct. 12, 1985, to Carol Jean Batten, who survives.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by a son, Steven Douglas Batten of New Market; two stepdaughters, Jennifer Michelle and her husband, Todd Fisher, of Crimora and Kelly Jean and her husband, Clayton Jackson, of Staunton; a sister, Ann Batten Losh of Boones Mill; and a brother, Garey E. Batten of Harrisonburg. He also is survived by two grandchildren, Cassie Earhart and Tiffany Fisher.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 26, 2007, at the Johnson Funeral Service Grottoes Chapel, with Pastor Merle Fisher officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Johnson Funeral Service.
