John Guy Blanton was born 2 Apr 1923 in Lyman, Skagit Co., WA to John Wesley Blanton and Dona Latham. He grew up in Skagit Co.
He worked for Boeing before entering the U.S.Navy and serving during WW II. After he was discharged from the Navy he worked in the logging industry in Skagit Co., and also Mason Co., for Shaefer Brothers. In 1951 he went to work for Rayonier until it closed in 1957.
John married Mary Ann Gasho on 19 Jan 1952. In 1957, he went to work for Dan Lynch and Walter Allen in the Oyster Business. In 1968 he and his wife purchased the oyster company from Herb Nelson and it is now known as the Blanton Oyster Co. It is still operated by their son John. In 1968 he and Jim Edwards purchased Ira Stansbury Oyster Co., and Walt Allens Oyster Co. The two companies were combined into the Skokum Bay Oyster Co.
Mr. Blanton was a member of the V.F.W., the Shelton Moose Lodge, Honorary member of the Nimrod Club and the Humane Society. He was selected as Mason Countys 'Man of the Year' in 1987. He helped support the annual clam dance to benefit Fire District 4. He was known as "Fourth of July John" for his famous clam bake and BBQ which he put on from 1954 to 1991.
John G. Blanton died 22 Dec 1991 in Mason General Hospital, in Shelton, WA.
Surviving Mr. Blanton, besides his wife, are four daughters, Kathy Hoosier, Shelton, WA, Betty Garrison, Olympia, WA, Donna Blanton, Shelton; and a son, John Blanton of Spokane, WA; a brother Glen Blanton of Sedro Wooley, WA; four sisters, Sadie Norton, Sedrow Wooley, Babe Ross, Burlington, Helen Fosket, Everett, and Betty Cross, Burlington; also 12 grandchildren.
He was buried in Shelton Memorial Park with services conducted by the V.F.W. Post 1694.
