George, age 92, beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend passed away Sunday, February 11, 2007, at his home in Provo.

Cliff was born June 12, 1914, in Salt Lake City, Utah to George Franklin and Lavinia Whitecar Backus. He grew up on the family farm in Pleasant Grove, Utah. After graduating from Pleasant Grove High School, Cliff bought his own milk route, picking up milk from dairies south of Provo. When Cliff began hauling milk he would go to Wallsburg on one of his routes. That is where he met Lorna Mecham. After Lorna graduated from high school, she moved to Provo. She and Cliff began dating and were married August 30, 1939 in the Salt Lake Temple. They bought a home in Provo where they raised their children. After 58 years of marriage, Lorna passed away on April 9, 1998. Meadow Gold Dairy hired Cliff as a Field Inspector and he worked there for thirty years, until he retired. Cliff was very active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as Bishop, Bishop's counselor, High Councilman, High Priest group leader, and Home Teacher. He served a mission with his wife in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana mission from 1983-1984. He was very instrumental in the development of the Youth Baseball Program in Provo City, serving as President of the Pony and Colt leagues. He devoted countless hours in the construction and administration of these programs. Cliff was an avid fisherman, hunter, and outdoorsman. He took great joy in carpentry and gardening. His greatest joy was his family. He was always serving and supporting them in all of their activities.

Cliff was preceded in death by his wife, Lorna, his parents, four sisters; Hazel Borup, Virginia Colledge, Dorothy Steiger, and Lavinia Beddoes; two brothers, Edward (Ted) Backus, and Dale (Dick) Backus.

He is survived by his three children: Kay (Larry) Dearden, Henefer, Utah; Reed (Nancy) Backus, Los Angeles, California; and Ann (Gary) Morrill, Coalville, Utah; 13 beloved grandchildren and 22 great-grand-children, one brother, Robert Backus Hilbert, many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 17, 2007, at the North Park 3rd Ward LDS Chapel, Provo.
