ELEVATOR FALL KILLS DRIVER
Chicago, Jan. 5 (AP) - A man fell to his death down an elevator shaft early today during an argument with the manager of a Loop parking garage over the handling of a car in the garage.
The garage manager, Frank Graham, told police that Stanley Bachusz slipped and fell into the shaft while trying to climb upon the elevator which Graham had raised four feet above the fourth-floor level.
Bachusz, a 42-year-old sheet metal worker, his brother-in-law, Stanley Niezgoda, 40, and their wives, had come to the Loop in Niezgoda's car to attend a church benefit dance Saturday night.
When they returned to the garage at 125 W. Wabash Ave. to pick up the car, Graham said, the men were taken to the fourth floor to start the car's engine because a garage attendant was unable to do so.
Graham said Niezgoda wanted to drive the car onto the elevator but acceded when Graham said it was the garage's responsibility to deliver the vehicle to the exit. But Bachusz tried to interfere, Graham said, and Graham raised the elevator to prevent either man from driving the car onto the elevator.
Graham said Bachusz lost his footing when he tried to climb onto the raised elevator.
Police said Niezgoda declined to make a statement.
