Thelma Cole Morgan, 93, a former resident of Dayton and Baytown, Texas, died Tuesday, July 26, in Sacramento, California.
Born on February 16, 1918, in Tarkington Prairie, Texas, to Jacob Caswell Cole and Rosa Dobbs Cole, Thelma graduated from Dayton High School in 1936 as the class valedictorian. She attended Lee College and worked as a bookkeeper and purchasing clerk At Culpepper Furniture Company in Baytown and Precoat Metals in Channelview. At Precoat, she was honored for her lead in establishing the company's first computer network for purchasing.
Thelma spent many hours researching the genealogy of the Cole family and Schlobohm families and was instrumental in winning the designation of a state historical cemetery for the Schlobohm family cemetery in Aldine, Texas, which was established by her great-grandfather, Johann Frederick Schlobolm, a veteran of the Texas Army that fought at the Battle of San Jacinto. She also was an avid gardener, bridge player and enjoyed traveling and visiting museums. Her family was the center of her life.
A member of Old River Baptist Church, Thelma also was a member of the Daughters of the Texas Republic and the San Jacinto Descendants.
Thelma is survived by her brother and sister-in law, Ray and Velma Cole of Crockett, Texas; a sister, Eloise Cole Johnson of Sweeney, Texas; her daughter, Darla Morgan of Austin, Texas; a grandson, Dwayne Klaus, of Austin, Texas; her niece, Keetha Mills of Sacramento, California; two former sons-in-law, Robert Ray Klaus of Baytown, Texas; and Jake Mills of Paris, Texas and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters and brothers, Lila Cole Cashat, Margaret Cole Dugat, Ruth Cole Hopper, Mable Cole Northcutt, Albert Cole, Jake Cole, Ray Cole and Eloise Cole; her daughter, Kay Morgan Mills, and a son, Robbie Morgan.
A memorial service is scheduled on Friday, August 5, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Old River Baptist Church in Mont Belvieu, Texas under the direction of Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton.
