James Craig
Birth: Oct. 31, 1739
Edinburgh, Scotland
Death: Jun. 23, 1795
Edinburgh, Scotland

Architect. In 1766, he won a competition for the planning of Edinburgh's New, "Georgian" Town (in contrast to the medieval city around the "Royal Mile"). This planning was rectangular, based on an arrangement of three parallel main streets (Princes Street, George Street and Queen Street) with a square at each end (St Andrew Square and Charlotte Square. It was adopted by King Georg III and realised until the end of the century. Despite this success and his authorship of many plans for famous single buildings, Craig died in poverty.
