Rajaan Jhakari Bennett, was an 18 year old well respected student and star athlete at Cobb County's McEachern High School, where he played Football.
He had been named an all-state running back and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's 25th-ranked college football prospect.
He currently lived in Powder Springs, Georgia but he was a native of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
He has recently been accepted to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee and been signed to play Football. Not only was he signed to play Football for The Vanderbilt University Commodores, he was the highest-rated signee in the Commodores' 2010 football signing class.
On Thursday, February 18, 2010 Rejaan was shot to death in a Murder Suicide by a man who had dated his Mother.
"Rajaan was an extraordinary young man and an ideal fit for Vanderbilt University," Vanderbilt football coach Bobby Johnson said in a statement. "Initially, our thoughts and prayers are with his, Mother Narjaketha and family members. I know he meant so much to them."
He rushed for 1,857 yards and 28 touchdowns last season for McEachern.
McEachern football coach Kyle Hockman called Bennett, "one of the best ever." He was 5-foot-11, 210-pounds, all muscle. He carried the ball 236 times for 1,857 yards and scored 29 touchdowns to lead McEachern to an undefeated regular season. He was the Class AAAAA offensive player of the year, first-team Class AAAAA All-State and No. 25 on the AJC's Fab 50, and now he was the highest-rated signee in the Commodores' 2010 football signing class. He also said the following about Rajaan Bennett, "He has a great head on his shoulders, a guy that has been the man in his household for quite a while, yet still worked to maintain a solid GPA in class and become such a great player. Rajaan is both humble and hard working. He's a guy that is very respected by his teammates and the McEachern community. I think the world of this young man."
Survivors are his mother, Ms. Narjaketha Bennett; siblings Narcharlette and Desybon Bennett; uncle, Taiwan Hunter; his best friend, DeMarius Matthews; his extended family, classmates, friends, teachers, and administrators.
McEachern High School held a memorial service for Bennett that was held on February 24, 2010 at 7 p.m. Visitation was held from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, February 26, 2010 at the First Baptist Church of Powder Springs. His funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at the Trinity Church Chapel of Georgia in Powder Springs. Burial followed at the the Cheatham Hill Memorial Park.
