Birth: 1943
Death: Jul., 1954

Dickin Medal Recipient. An Alsatian, or German Shepard, he served as a MAP (Ministry of Aircraft Production) Civil Defense Rescue Dog during the London Blitz. He was reportedly an extremely intelligent dog, and a dog of uncommon valor following scent marks without regard to flame and smoke. One of his more memorable rescues occurred In January 1945, while working in Lambeth, London, he scratched at an area already searched by rescue squads. The ground was bloody where he dug away earth to reveal a buried bed. Rex pulled at the bedding and revealed casualties who would otherwise have been overlooked. He was recommended for the Medal, popularly known as the animal's VC in 1945: "For outstanding good work in the location of casualties in burning buildings. Undaunted by smouldering debris, thick smoke, intense heat and jets of water from fire hoses, this dog displayed uncanny intelligence and outstanding determination in his efforts to follow up any scent which led him to a trapped casualty." He is recorded as having rescued more than 60 people from building debris. He died at age 11, his passing noted in newspapers throughout the United Kingdom.
