Benjamin Goodwin's Obituary
The remains of Benjamin Goodwin, a former resident of Wilmington, were brought here from Creal Springs, Illinois, for burial on Monday. Mr. Goodwin was in his 92nd year, having been born in Morristown, St. Lawrence County, New York in 1832. He was twice married. His first wife being Mary Soper, of Morristown. Six sons were born of this union. They are Joseph Henry, who died, Benjamin, of San Francisco, Frank, John, and Irving, of Seattle, Washington, and George, of Creal Springs, Ill.
His second wife was Sarah Dyer, of Hoopeston, Ill., who with these sons and fifteen grandchildren live to mourn his loss. Mrs. Mary Kahler, a niece and Alfred Richardson and Hiram Goodwin, nephews reside in Wilmington.
Funeral services were held in Melcher's Funeral Home on Tuesday afternoon at one o'clock and were conducted by the Rev. Beckwith of the Presbyterian church. He spoke from the text "With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation" Psalm 91 verse 16.
Miss Emma McCune and Miss Kittle Mitchell sang by request "Safe in the Arms of Jesus" and "Watching and Waiting for Me."
The pall bearers were the Messrs. J.C. Thompson, Thad Gunning, James A. Harden, L.B. Cassingham, Henry Allott and George Nail.
Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery.
