Emmalene Baker of Eldorado died Sunday, June 8, 2008, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind.
She was born Oct. 6, 1926, the daughter of Ernest Melvin Bonner and Bertha Marie (Gidcumb) Bonner of Herald.
Emmalene lived most of her life in Eldorado. She operated Johnson's Cafe with her sister, Verlene, in the late 1950s and early 1960s. In 1962, she married Arch Baker and worked with him at Baker Furniture until retirement. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Eldorado, a loving mother, grandmother and a friend to many. She touched many lives, and will be greatly missed and loved forever.
She is survived by three sons, Ernest VanZant of McLeansboro, Gary and Barbara VanZant of Eldorado and Norman and Mary VanZant of West Frankfort; three stepchildren, Shirley Porter of Douglas, Wyo., Denise Muller of Carterville and Jared Baker of Newburgh, Ind.; nine grandchildren, Nicole Frey, Ernie VanZant Jr. and Rachel Jones of McLeansboro and Wes VanZant of Vandalia, Brad, Steve, Scott and Eric VanZant of Eldorado and Tonya Helfrich of West Frankfort; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one niece, Hilda Douthitt of Eldorado.
In addition to her parents, Emmalene was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Arch D. Baker; her sister, Verlene Douthitt; her brother, Floyd Bonner; and a daughter-in-law, Abigil VanZant.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at Colonial Terrace Funeral Home in Eldorado with the Rev. Julie Allison officiating. Burial will be in Lindale Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at the funeral home
