Officer Fred W. Benz was a Police Officer with the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department.
Special Officer Benz was shot and killed after he and several other officers responded to a burglary call on Amherst Place in the Twelfth District.
While the other officers searched the house, the suspect jumped from a window, landing next to Officer Benz. When the Officer ordered the man to stop, the man opened fire with a handgun striking Officer Benz.
Other officers returned fire, wounding the man before taking him into custody.
Officer Benz was rushed to St. Luke's Hospital where he was pronounced as a result of the gun shot wound to his abdomen at 9:30 PM.
Officer Benz had been with the Saint Louis Police Department for 21 years.
Officer Benz left to mourn his passing his wife Emma (nee Goeddel) Benz of the home at 5959 Page Avenue, and his mother Marie (nee Liebig) Benz.
He was predeceased by his father Gottlieb Benz.
The wake and funeral were held at the George L. Pleitsch Funeral Home located at 5966 Easton Avenue.
Internment took place at the Bethany Cemetery on 11/26/1924.
