Major Lawrence E. Akley, DSN 4448, was hired as a civilian research clerk for the Saint Louis Police Library on 07/12/1962. He remained in this position until he entered the department academy on 08/26/1963. After the academy he was assigned to the 4Th District, Intelligence Division, Office of the Chief of Police, 3Rd District, Office of the Chief of Police, 4Th District, Office of the Chief of Police, 9Th District, Office of the Chief of Police, Bureau of Services, Office of the Chief of Police, Planning and Development Section, Office of the Chief of Police, Bureau of Field Operations, Office of the Chief of Police, and finally at the Commander of the North Patrol Division, which is for Districts 6, 7, and 8. During his career he was awarded 9 Chief's Letters of Commendation for outstanding police work. When Major Akley retired on 09/10/1990 he had completed 28.16 years of faithful and dedicated service to the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department.

Akley (nee Nicholas) for 48 years; dearest father of Steve (Amy) Akley and Kelly (Jeff) Brooks; loving grandfather of Catherine Akley, Nathan and Mason Brooks; dear brother of Della Norris and the late Ada Kleinschrodt and Wilma Motta; our dear brother-in-law, uncle, great uncle and friend to many. Respected as a Policeman's Policeman. Services: Funeral at KUTIS SOUTH COUNTY CHAPEL, 5255 Lemay Ferry Rd., Tuesday, December 18 at 9 a.m. Interment Mount Hope Cemetery. Memorials to the Backstoppers Appreciated. Visitation Monday 3-8 p.m.


It is with deep sadness and sorrow that we announce the passing of Retired Major of Police Lawrence E. Akley. Major Akley, DSN 4448, retired from the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department as the Commander of Area 3 (North Patrol Division) in 1990, after more than 28 years of dedicated service to the Department and the citizens of Saint Louis , Missouri .

Major Akley began his career with the Department in 1963 as a Probationary Police Officer in the Fourth District. During his career, Major Akley career assignments in the Third District, Intelligence Division, Chief's Office, Commander District Nine, Commander Planning and Development, Commander Bureau of Field Operations (Major).

Major Akley was a highly decorated officer who received nine (9) Chief Letters of Commendation. He was a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the University of Missouri .

Major Akley leaves behind his loving wife Sandra Akley. Major Akley was a loving father, grandfather and friend to many.

On the behalf of the grateful citizens of the City of St. Louis and these great United States of America , we say thank you for your commitment and sacrifice, and God's speed.
