Margaret Adeline Sikes was born on the May plantation near Chesterfield, South Carolina, the daughter of DeBerry Furman Sikes and his wife Jane Boggan Wood. They had five children. Two of Maggie's younger brothers, Solomon and Furman, Confederate soldiers, were killed at the Battle of Gettysburg, July 3, 1863.

Maggie was educated in South Carolina at a private school owned by her grandfather Alfred Wood. She later taught at the Oakdale School where she met and married James Thomas "Tom" Beachum (1837-1907, son of Hugh A. Beachum and Zillah O'Neal) of Anson Co., NC, on Jan. 1, 1869. Tom was also a Confederate soldier, haivng served in Co. K, 43rd NC Regiment, CSA.

Tom and Maggie had 6 children: Alice F. Beachum (1869-1922, Mrs. Tero Griffin), Annie Jane Beachum (1871-1881), Harriet A. "Hattie" Beachum (1874-1943, Mrs. Scott Tucker), Dudley Thomas Beachum (1875-1939), William Henry Beachum (1877-1883), and Rosa Mae Beachum (1879-1933, Mrs. Bud Dabbs).
