Birth: Mar. 2, 1806
Anson County
North Carolina, USA
Death: Dec. 7, 1861
Anson County
North Carolina, USA

Hugh A. (possibly Alexander) Beachum was one of the 11 children of Alexander Beachum (c. 1764-aft. 1820) and his wife Elizabeth Shelton (c. 1774-aft. 1820). His paternal grandparents were Isaac Beachum (c.1727-1776/7) and his wife Susannah Hill (1730s-1820s); and his maternal grandfather was Beverley Shelton (d. 1814). I am afraid I do not know his maternal grandmother's name.

Hugh married Zillah (Miller?) "Zille" O'Neal (1812-1882) a daughter of Kindred O'Neal (c. 1785-1855) and his wife Culia Hayles (1790s-1840s), around 1829. Hugh's younger brother Isaiah S. Beachum (1812-1894) married Phereba O'Neal (1818-1888), Zillie's younger sister. A third O'Neal sister, Nancy Ellen O'Neal (c.1828-1885) married James Alexander Beachum (c.1827-1865), who was probably a nephew of Hugh & Isaiah.

Hugh and Zillie had seven (or nine) children (the ones marked with an asterisk * could possibly have been Isaiah & Phereba's children): Jeremiah Washington Beachum (1830-1910), Joseph J. (probably Jackson) Beachum (1832/3-1865), Harriet Jane Beachum (1834-1872, Mrs. James B. Dees), James Thomas Beachum (1837-1907), William Henry Beachum (1839-1862), Allen Beachum (c.1841-1849*), Mary A. Beachum (c.1843-1949*), Daniel K. (probably Kindred) Beachum (1847-1923) and Christina Clementine Beachum (1854-1862).

Hugh, Zillie, Harriet and Christina are buried in this small family cemetery on Bunn Road, between Kiker Road and Birmingham Road, on what was their home place. The gravestones are all broken or missing, except for that of Daisy Taylor (1887-1896) a great granddaughter. The cemetery was fenced in by James L. Taylor of Florida in 1995, and he and some other Taylor family members placed a large marker there, as well as markers to Daisy Taylor and Louisa Carolina Dees Taylor (b. 1860) Hugh and Zillie's granddaughter.

A marble monument dedicated to the memory of Hugh Beachum (1806-1861) was paced by Wayne Beachum, a descendant, on Oct. 23, 2004. In addition, servants of the Beachum & Taylor families are supposedly buried here as well.
