Third son and seventh of fourteen children born to Jeremiah Washington Beachum (1830-1910) and his wife Mary Jane "Cisey" Taylor (1836-1882). Joseph was probably named after his uncle who was a Confederate soldier killed in the War. The family Bible states that he was age 16 years, 4 months, 29 days. He died of typhoid fever.
