Samuel was born in Haigh (near the city of Wigan), Lancashire, in May 1864. He was the first born to James and Elizabeth (Austin) Ashurst(and their only son). In August of 1880, age 16, he sailed with his mother and 5 sisters aboard the ship, The British Empire. They met his father who had come to the US in 1879. They first settled in Philipsburg, Pa. where Samuel joined James in working in a coal mine. Samuel met and married Harriet Bergin in Clearfield County, Pa. They would have 8 children (Robert, Mae, James, John, Loy, Mildred, Elizabeth, and Vincent). The family moved to the new town of Barnesboro in late 1893-early 1894.
Samuel worked at the Barnes and Tucker Coal Co. in Barnesboro, Pa. for most of his life as a miner. His obituary in the Barnesboro Star newspaper is titled,"Highly Esteemed Barnesboro Man Dies" - a tribute to how he was thought about in the community.

Dear Great Grandfather,
Thank you for being a dedicated father and such a hard worker. I admire the job you did all those years as a coal miner!
Love, Diane
