"Shank" was one of a set of twins (Brother was David Gardiner Ackerly) born to Peter and Lydia Ackerly, numbers 11 & 12 of their children. Shank and David joined Company C, 14th Virginia Cavalry, CSA when they were 17. Shank married Amanda Selvey in 1884. He was father of two sons, William and Richard. Shank lived & farmed on the land that the Ackerly's owned during his life and also in Buchanan, Botecourt, Co.,Viginia where he died.
