Wichita cardiologist Ashok Bajaj died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, when the plane he was piloting crashed at the Benton Airpark.Bajaj, 49, and his wife, Trish, 50, were killed Saturday evening when their twin-engine plane crashed shortly after taking off from the Benton Airpark east of Wichita.

The couple are survived by two sons -- Brian, 22, who recently graduated from Kansas State University, and Kevin, 19, a freshman at the University of Kansas.

Authorities said Bajaj's plane crashed and burned in a muddy field about one mile from the airport, strewing debris for a half-mile.

Visibility and clouds were both low at the time of the crash, said Jennifer Kaiser of the National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating the accident.

Butler County Sheriff Craig Murphy said it was also raining.

"It was not good, I can tell you that," Murphy said.

Prem Bajaj said his son had planned to land at Jabara Airport in east Wichita to pick up a friend, then continue to Austin to participate in a marathon.

At least one motorist along nearby Highway 254 witnessed the crash, Murphy said, but authorities are not sure what went wrong.

Ashok and Trish Bajaj grew up in Wichita and married in 1978, Prem Bajaj said.

Bajaj surprised his family by deciding to become a doctor shortly after graduating from Southeast High School. Prem Bajaj described his son as confident, decisive and a good communicator.

"In fact, I learned a lot from him," said the elder Bajaj, a former longtime professor of mathematics and statistics at Wichita State University.

Ashok Bajaj graduated from KU medical school, then served his residency at Vanderbilt University in Nashville before returning to Wichita, where he eventually opened Bajaj Electrophysiology on East Murdock, specializing in the heart's electrical system.

A 1991 article in The Eagle reported that Bajaj was the first physician in Kansas to perform a radio frequency ablation, a procedure used on patients with abnormally fast heartbeats.

But Prem Bajaj said his son knew medicine was about more than technology.

"Once in a while, we used to talk when he was in medical school," he said. "He found patients waiting for such a long time, and he said, 'When I become a doctor, I'm not going to make them wait.' As his practice grew, he wasn't always able to do that, but he said, 'I still do my best.' "

Ashok Bajaj had taken up flying about three years ago. The plane that crashed Saturday was the second he had owned.

Trish Bajaj was active in the Junior League of Wichita and Trees For Life organization, and also taught English as a Second Language courses at a local church, her father-in-law said. She had recently taken flying lessons.
