Birth: Oct. 6, 1869
Frederick County

Death: Feb. 11, 1958

Maryland, USA

Because of common usage, I'm listing Ma'am as Viola Ellen but her legal name is Ellen Viola. She hated the name Ellen and, when she was young, just reversed the two names so that people would use what they thought was her first name, Viola. She was also known by the nickname Ola when her younger siblings couldn't pronounce Viola. Later, her sons all called her Ma'am.

Ma'am's first husband was Lewis Edward Moser. Her second husband was David Isaac Duncan.

Published in the Frederick Post, Frederick, Maryland, 13 February 1958, and copied here with any errors:
Mrs. Viola E. Duncan, widow of David Duncan, who died Tuesday evening, Feb. 11, at her home in Foxville, were held Saturday at 2 p.m., in the Mt. Bethel Methodist Church at Garfield. Rev. Basil Grossnickle officiated. A daughter of the late Allen E. and Martha Kesselring-Hayes, she was 88 years of age. Her husband predeceased her by 26 years. Surviving are the following children: Mrs. Lydia Toms, Pecatonica, Ill.; Mrs. Martha Kunkel, Hagerstown; Marshall Moser, Sabillasville; Mrs. Lillie Willard, Baltimore; Samuel Duncan, Cascade; Mrs. Fern Fox, Lantz; 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Minnie Williams, Portland, Ore.; two-step-sisters, Mrs. Lula Buhrman, Westminster; Mrs. Emma Bumbaugh, Hagerstown, and one step-brother, Paul Hayes, Wolfsville. During the services, the church choir sang "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," "The Old Rugged Cross," and "Goodbye Here, But Good Morning Up There." Mrs. Charles Marker was the organist. The pallbearers were: Eldin Buhrman, Theodore Buhrman, Ray Brandenburg, Andrew Abraham, Charles Marker and Edward Hobbs. Interment was in Mr. Bethel Cemetery, M. L. Creager & Son, funeral directors.

Survivors: correct spelling is Kunkle.
