Frances Ray Benson, 82, of Amarillo, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Park Place Towers with the Rev. F.M. Byford officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. in Memorial Park Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Mrs. Benson was born in Plemons to Hardy W. and Lillie L. Pitts on March 11, 1921. She spent her childhood and elementary school years in Hutchinson County. The family moved to Amarillo in 1935, where she graduated from Amarillo High School in 1938.
She attended West Texas State College in Canyon and Texas Tech University in Lubbock, where she met and married Jimmie Lynn Wilson in 1941. She received her bachelor's degree in 1943 from Texas Tech in home economics, specializing as a dietician. Following World War II, they moved to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, where she began a 31-year career as a teacher and librarian for Central Vallely School District in Spokane, Wash., teaching in the Greenacres Elementary Grade School the majority of years. In 1959, she earned a master's degree in education from Eastern Washington College in Cheney, Wash.
Following retirement in January 1981, Frances Benson began a long active volunteer service in the Kootenal Medical Center Auxiliary, where she served as president. She was also an active member in the Methodist Guild and the Retired Teachers Association. After 50 years in Coeur d'Alene and being widowed a second time, she returned to Amarillo in 1998, residing in Park Place Towers until her death.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmie L. Wilson; her second husband, Otto A. Benson of Spokane; two brothers, John Pitts and Hardy Pitts; and three sisters, Leah Potter, Margaret Brooks and Nell Touchstone.
Survivors include three daughters, Rita Tinsley of New Braunfels, Linda Carlton of Estacada, Ore., and Eloise Hanner of Sarasota, Fla.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Edna Bassett and Clara West, both of Amarillo; and two brothers, James C. Pitts of Wichita, Kan., and Dr. Robert R. Pitts of Plainview.
