Thomas R. Pellegrino, M.D., died at home on Thursday, November 17, 2011 after a short illness. With his passing the Hampton Roads community, especially the Eastern Virginia Medical School, have lost a distinguished physician, teacher and friend. He is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Jane A. Brodie Pellegrino, his son and his daughter-in-law, Daniel E. and Nicole M. Krieger Pellegrino and his daughter, son-in-law and grandson, Alice M. Pellegrino, Bryan K., II and Andrew Thomas Cowan. His memory will long be honored by all who were privileged to know him and to work with him.
Dr. Pellegrino was born in New York City, the son of Clementine Coakley Pellegrino and Edmund D. Pellegrino, M.D. Dr. and Mrs. Edmund D. Pellegrino currently reside in Bethesda, Maryland. Thomas was the oldest of seven siblings: the late Stephen M. Pellegrino, formally of Frankfort, Kentucky, Virginia M. Pellegrino of Huntington Beach, California, Michael J. Pellegrino of La Plata, Maryland, Alice A. Pellegrino of West Hartford, Connecticut and Andrea E Pellegrino and Leah C. Pellegrino of Arlington, Virginia. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Christopher DiCicco of Huntington Beach, California and Ronald Keith of Arlington, Virginia.
Dr. Pellegrino attended Providence College on a National Institutes of Health scholarship where he obtained his BS in biology. He received an M. Phil. from Yale University. He earned his MD degree from the University of Kentucky where he was named as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, national medical honor society. He completed his residencies in Internal Medicine and Neurology at Yale University.
In July of 1980 Dr. Pellegrino accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Neurology at Eastern Virginia Medical School where he has spent his entire professional career. Dr. Pellegrino served as Chairman of the Department of Neurology, Director of the Neurology Residency and was named James E. Etheridge, Jr. MD Distinguished Professor in Neurology. Over the years Dr. Pellegrino developed a strong interest in medical ethics, which was the focus of much of his teaching. Dr. Pellegrino participated in the founding of the EVMS Chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha for which he served as Counselor. During part of his service at EVMS he engaged in the private practice of neurology as a partner with Neurology Specialists. In 2006 he retired from private clinical practice to assume the role of Associate Dean for Education at EVMS.
Throughout his career at EVMS Dr. Pelllegrino was much loved and respected by his patients and their families and his colleagues. He was recognized as a outstanding clinician and teacher. Dr. Pellegrino was the first recipient of the Dean Faculty Achievement Award in Clinical Teaching at EVMS and a recipient of the Virginia Distinguished Faculty Award that recognizes outstanding faculty from all colleges and universities in Virginia. After learning of Dr. Pellegrino's illness the students of EVMS presented a one and a half hour tribute to Dr. Pelllegrino, recognizing his skills and accomplishments as a physician, teacher, and mentor.
In addition to his busy life as a physician and educator, Dr. Pelllegrino was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was an active parishioner at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Norfolk. He was a lifelong lover of the outdoors enjoying camping, hiking, sailing, biking and kayaking. His interest in woodworking culminated in his building two wooden kayaks that he enjoyed paddling in the local rivers.
Dr. Pellegrino respected everyone and they him. He was known for his great sense of humor. He had varied interests, was broadly read, and loved to engage in animated discussions. Everyone loved to learn from him. He will live on through his children and their children as well as through the thousands of EVMS graduates who learned under his tutelage. He will be fondly remembered and sorely missed.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Monday November 21, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Daniel Klem officiating. A Christian Wake Service will be held Sunday evening at 7:00 P.M. at the church. H.D Oliver Funeral Apts. Norfolk Chapel is handling arrangements.
