Arvel Verlin Smith was born on February 20, 1925, in Haywood, North Carolina. His father, Charles VanBuren was 40 and his mother, Verna Gertrude Singleton was 29. He married Mabel Anne Askew on May 6, 1955, in Elizabethton, Carter, Tennessee. They had three children during their marriage.

He was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and Steed College and a member of First Christian Church, Elizabethton TN. Mr. Smith was also a Mason.

Mr. Smith was retired from the U.S. Army after serving twenty-eight years during World War II, the Korean conflict and the Vietnam era. He worked in the Laboratory at the V.A. Medical Center, Johnson City, Tennessee for ten years.

He died on February 27, 2006, in Elizabethton, Tennessee, at the age of 81, and was buried in Mountain Home National Cemetery, Johnson City, Tennessee.
