Mr. Charles W. Elgin Sr., 81, former Poolesville mayor and postmaster, died Saturday, Jan. 18, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Rockville.

He was the husband of Dorothy Jones Elgin, his wife of 55 years.

Born Sept. 18, 1915, in Poolesville, he was the son of the late Arthur G. and Diana Carpenter Elgin, and stepson of the late Mary A. Elgin.

Mr. Elgin was a 1932 graduate of Poolesville High School. He then attended Pratt School of Business in New York City and St. John's College in Annapolis. After he returned to Poolesville, he co-owned Elgin Brothers Drug Store for 15 years.

Mr. Elgin was postmaster of Poolesville, a position he held for 33 years until his retirement in December 1973.

After he served on the Poolesville Planning Commission for 10 years, he was elected president of the Town Commission. He held the position of mayor until he retired in November 1992.

Mr. Elgin was a charter member of the Monocacy Lions Club as well as a charter member and past president of the Upper Montgomery Volunteer Fire Department. He was a life-long member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry for 15 years. He also served in the capacity of senior warden. He was also secretary and treasurer of the Monocacy Cemetery Co. for 53 years.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one son, Charles Elgin Jr. of Poolesville; one daughter, Mary Conlon of Poolesville; a daughter-in-law, Donna Elgin of Poolesville; a son-in-law, Thomas Conlon of Poolesville; two grandsons, Ty and Scott Conlon, both of Poolesville; and one granddaughter, Jenni Elgin of Poolesville.

Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at the Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville, Road, Barnesville. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 20100 Fisher Ave, Poolesville. Interment will be in Monocacy Cemetery, Beallsville.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to either St. Peter's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 387, Poolesville, Md. 20837, or Upper Montgomery County Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 8, Beallsville, Md. 20842.

Charles Elgin was my mentor and friend. he loved the Town of Poolesville, MD and gave much of his life to that town and it's people.
