On 1 Sep 1867 in Newton County, Missouri, he married twice-widowed Serena Appeline Elliott Crain Davis. "Appie" had two sons and a daughter from her prior marriages. She and John had seven children together before she died. Their names were James, John, Mary, Thomas, George, Lulu, and Alice Belle. He can be found in Eastland County, Texas at that time. His second wife died about a year after their last child, Alice, was born. John died on March 6, 1923 in O'Donnel, Texas.
