Birth: Aug. 14, 1915
Mattingly
Breckinridge County
Kentucky, USA
Death: Jun. 19, 1983
Hardinsburg
Breckinridge County
Kentucky, USA

Known for her gentle spirit and kind hospitality, Helen enjoyed great popularity among local residents in Breckinridge County. Those who were invited to her home were served large meals, often featuring three or four meats, several vegetables, and a variety of cakes and pies made from scratch. During the 1940's and 1950's, relatives from Indiana, Illinois, Colorado, and Michigan were frequent guests in her home.

She was a member of Pisgah Baptist Church, where at different times she served as the church clerk and the church treasurer.

She became the cook and manager of the lunchroom at the Frederick Fraize High School and William H. Natcher Elementary School.

In the spring of 1982, she was diagnosed with colon cancer, which had metastatized to the liver. She died about fifteen months later at the age of 67.

Her funeral was one of the largest ever conducted in Breckinridge County, with over 700 people attending the visitation and service - so large that the service was moved from her home church to the Cloverport Baptist Church, which filled to capacity.

Published in the Breckinridge County Herald-News newspaper:
May 15, 1964
Residents of Cloverport are justly proud of their school lunch program. The fact that Cloverport School lunchroom serves an average of 80 percent of the students attending the school is cause for the point of pride. Mrs. Lamar Ryan, supervisor of the lunch program for the past eight years, does all of the menu planning, the buying and the actual work supervision. Mrs. James Etta Powers and Mrs. Lillie Board, cooks, give most of the credit for the lunchroom's popularity to Mrs. Ryan. The reporter from the Herald-News ate on a surprise visit to the school. The menu consisted of a barbecue pork sandwich, green beens, whole kernel corn, diced tomatoes, apple pie, muffins and sweet milk. Lunches of this sort cost the students 25 cents and for teachers 30 cents.
