CUMBO, William Frank Jr., Ph.D, heeded the Great Spirit's call and moved unto the place of his Grandfathers on Tuesday, December 30, 2008. He was a member of the Tuscarora Tribe of North Carolina. He is survived by his devoted wife, Thelma R. Cumbo; two sons, William "Chico" F. Cumbo III and Antonio "Tono" Malabad Cumbo; a grandson, Bennett Slade Cumbo; a daughter-in-law, Sherrah B. Cumbo; one aunt, Lucia Cumbo of North Carolina; and countless cousins. The family will receive friends on Friday, January 2, 2009 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 8200 Woodman Road, where a Christian wake will be held at 7 p.m., and where a Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 11 a.m. Saturday. Interment Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements by Angelus Funeral & Cremation Traditions.
William Frank Coumbo, Jr., PHD, a member of the Tuscarora Tribe of North Carolina, was athe first born son of William Frank Cumbo, Sr, and Develyn Slade Cumbo. He was born in Raleigh, North Carolina on June 9, 1936. As a youngster, Frank attended St. Monica's Catholic School from St. Emma Military Academy in Powhatan, Virginia in 1954 and joined the U.S. Navy a month later. He served in Attack Squadron 66 and Guided missile Unit 3 during his active duty, traveling to the Mediterranean twice and to Cuba three times. He graduated from St. Augustine's College in Raleigh in 1962 with a B.S. in Pre-Med/Biology. That same year he married Thelma Marie Rudd, the girl who he had met while at St. Emma and was destined to marry. He received his Masters in Education from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1974, the Certificate of Advanced Degree Study
(CAGS)from Virginia Tech in 1990 and the Doctor of Philosophy from Pacific Western in 1991. As an educator, Dr. Cumbo served as a teacher in Goochland County in 1962-63 at St. Emma, his Alma Mater from 1963 to 1969, at Huguenot High School in 1971. He then became an administrator(Vice-Principal) at Patrick Henry High School in Ashland where he served for two years. He moved on to Henrico where he was Assistant Principal at J.B.Tucker High for six years and at Henrico High for two years. In 1980 he became Commandant of Franklin Military School in Richmond. In 1980 he became Commandant of Franklin Military School in Richmond. In l988, he moved to Henderson Alternative High School as administrator. In l989, he took over as Assistant Principal at Armstrong High School as administrator. In l998 he was Assistant Principal at Huguenot High School, retiring 200l. In l962, his senior year at St. Augustine's, he received a Presidential Appointment from President John F. Kennedy to the National Park Service, assigned as a Park ranger Naturalist to Sequoia National Park in California. He spent two summers there, driving there and back after teaching the year. He was then assigned to Colonial National Historical Park(Jamestown and Yorktown). Diving his days and nights between teaching and being a Ranger, he commuted from Powhatan and Richmond to Jamestown and Yorktown for many years.
