LAVERNE M. HUGHES DAVIS
LAVERNE HUGHES DAVIS was born to the late Randolph and Elizabeth Hughes on October 9, 1938 in Richmond, Virginia.
She was preceded in death by two sisters Estelle Gore and Yvonne Lewis.
LaVerne was educated in the Richmond Public School system and graduated from Maggie L. Walker High School. She received her BS degree from Virginia Union University and her Masters degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. She was employed with Richmond Public Schools for 34 years, teaching at West End Elementary, William Fox Elementary and Blackwell Elementary. She dedicated her life to her profession exemplifying a stellar teacher.
From an early age, LaVerne was gifted in music. She shared her gift and; love of music beginning in church which proceeded through the community. She served for many years as Minister of Music for Fifth Baptist Church and also played for choirs at Antioch Baptist Church, The Salvation Army, Mount Olive Baptist Church, and the Children's Choir of Union Baptist Church. Laverne's songs have ended, but the melodies will linger on. Socially LaVerne was one of the founding members of EMI of Richmond, a member of the Charmettes of Richmond, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and various other organizations.
She is survived by a loving and devoted daughter, Denise M. Davis-Johnson; a caring husband, Reverend Robert C. Davis; a loving sister, Dorothy H. Taylor(Nehemiah) of Washington, DC;three loving brothers, Deacon Henry Hughes of Richmond; Deacon John Hughes(Sally) of Washington, DC, and William Hughes(Bernice) of Maryland; three uncles; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many devoted friends, among them Gladstone Johnson.
