The eldest of thirteen children born to John and Mary (Rees) Bowen of Pencraig, in the parish of Cilycwm, county of Carmarthenshire, South Wales. Daniel emigrated to Wilkes Barre PA in 1873 and was followed to the United States by four siblings and a nephew. He married Annie McIntyre, an immigrant from Ireland and they had four children. Two of his male siblings died in their teens.
