James William Briscoe was born in Hemp Ridge, Kentucky in 1842. He was the son of Hezekiah Briscoe Sr. and Rachael McClain and was the Grandson of James Briscoe Jr. and Elizabeth Carriss, and Thomas McClain and Elizabeth Besty Gray. By 1850 James and his brother Hezekiah Briscoe (b 1846)were orphaned and were living with their uncle and aunt William and Sarah McClain in Shelby County, Kentucky.
James was a Civil War veteran and member of the Kentucky 6th Regiment Volunteer Infantry, Company D (Union Forces). He was mustered in on 12/24/61, at the age of 19, a resident of Harrisonville, Kentucky. He was promoted on 6/30/63 to Corporal, and on 10/2/64 to 1st Lieutenant, and resigned 1/18/65.
He married Maria Josephine Carriss on 30 August 1866 in Shelby County, Kentucky. The children born to this marriage were: Jenny Williamette (1876), Charles E (1878), Dora B. (1879), Marion Clay (1882), James luther (1884), Mary Martha (1885), William (1886, Ann Elizabeth (1887), and Lucile E (1907).
He died in the town of Waddy, Kentucky in 1914. He is buried next to his wife Maria in the Salem Baptist Church Cemetery in Shelbyville, Kentucky.
