Eddyville Tribune-Thursday- Aug 9, 1923
George W. Nevins was born at Terre Haute, Indiana, April 7 1847, and passed away at the Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa, Iowa, Thursday, July 26, 1923, at the age of 76 years, 3 months and 19 days. Mr. Nevins was always a very active man for one of his age until a short time ago he began failing and rapidly went down. He was taken to the hospital July 16 and from then on grew weaker. He served in the Civil Was, enlisting at the age of 17 years and serving for three years. He came to Iowa at the age of 21 years and resided continually since in the vicinity of Bethel. On September 22, 1868, he was married to Eliza Johnson and to this union were born three sons and two daughter, on son John of Des Moines and a daughtr preceding him in death, Leaving besides his life companion, two sons, C.W. Nevins of Lakonta and Ozzie E. Nevins of New Sharon, and a daughter Mrs. Elizabeth Rhodes of near Lakonta, a large number of grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Mr. Nevins united with Christian church forty years ago and has since been a faithful member. He had served many years as Sunday School superintendent, elder in the church, and was also Justice of the Piece for the township and dealt out justice to all. He lived a model life and his friends were numbered by his acquaintances. He will be greatly missed by neighbors and friends and also the church will lose one of its faithful members. While his health and that of his wife has not been so they could attend the services of late, we felt their presence near. Our sympathy goes out to the aged, companion who is so frail, and to the family. The funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon at Bethel church conducted by Rev. J.M. Elam of Oskaloosa. He was buried in the Bethel Cemetery by the side of his son John. A large crowd attended the funeral to show respect to their good neighbor and friend.
