Elmer Jacob Goettman, 90, died Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at Brookhaven Manor, Kingsport, TN, following a period of declining health.

Born January 10, 1919 in Rochester, PA, he lived in Pennsylvania until 1967, when he retired from Jones & Laughlin Steel in Aliquippa, PA after 31 years of service as a steelworker, Metallurgist, and chemist.

Elmer and his family moved to Saltville, VA in 1967, to work at Olin Chemical Corporation as Safety Engineer. He was transferred to Lake Charles, LA in 1974 then to Taunton, MA in 1975. Elmer went to work at Copper Craft in 1977. After an automobile accident in 1981, he and his wife, Bunny, moved to Kingsport, TN in 1982 to be near their daughters' home, where he lived until October 2008, when he was moved to Brookhaven Manor Nursing Facility.

Mr. Goettman served in World War II with the U.S. Army 5th Air Force from 1942 until 1945 serving 39 months in the South Pacific, where he earned five bronze stars during various campaigns. He taught CCD for 16 years at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, New Brighton, PA and St. John's Catholic Church, Marion, VA. He was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church, Kingsport, TN.

His wife of 61 years, Bunny, parents, Myrtle and Elmer Goettman; an infant daughter, Mary Elizabeth; sister, Mary Louise Day, and brother, Thomas Goettman, preceded him in death.

Surviving are his three daughters and their husbands, Margaret and Matthew Tolbert (his care providers) Kingsport, TN; Bertha and Joseph Stevenson, Midland, PA; and Joan and David Moitoza, Rotunda, FL; five grandchildren, Michelle Tolbert Jones and Erik Tolbert, Kingsport, TN; Carolyn Dugger, Brooke Moitoza, Angela Moitoza, all of Florida, and two great-grandchildren, Kyle and James Jones, Kingsport, TN.
