Birth: Nov. 20, 1957
Death: Sep. 1, 1985

Motor racing driver. Born in Geissen, Germany. At one time Germany produced some of the greatest Grand Prix drivers, such as Rudi Caracciola, Manfred Von Brauchitsch and Bernd Rosemeyer however no one seemed to replace these stars. Wolfgang Von Trips died within grasp of the World Championship in 1961, but when Stefan Bellof arrived, he was a star in the making. Sensationally quick, some said impetuous, his aggressive style of driving saw lap records tumble. After a spell in Formula 2, in 1983 he raced the Rothmans Porsche sportscar to wins at Monza, Nurburgring, Spa, Imola, Mount Fujii and Sandown Park. On 1983 he turned down the offer of a drive with ATS but joined the Tyrrell team the following year. His enthusiasm to race, some said, bordered on the reckless and driving a Walter Brun-entered Porsche in the Spa 1000km race in Belgium, he attempted an audacious overtaking manoeuvre on his former team mate Jackie Ickx at the daunting Eau Rouge. It didn't work and they collided with Bellof's car crashing into the barriers with fatal consequences.
