Birth: Apr. 12, 1924, England
Death: Dec. 26, 2000, England

He was a close friend of Henry Ford II and I had the pleasure of being an aquaintance friend of his. Walter was born in the United Kingdom in Harrow, Middlesex England, and by coincidence, was a distant cousin of mine. I use to E-mail him his last year of his life, and wrote to him and he wrote me back. I met him once as a child, and strangely he remembered that day and I did not. When we met again, I had bumped into him no surprise, at a antique car show held at The Henry Ford in 1999. It was an honor to know him and I sure hope he did not suffer too badly. His children at the end were taking care of him. Thanks for the memories Walter and the wonderful book you left us on Henry Ford II. Walter was a Royal Air Force Cadet Pilot during WWII.
Walter had been the former Vice President of Public Affairs for Ford Motor Company. He retired from the Chairmanship of Aston Martin in 1989, after being brought back out of retirement. Ford of Britain owes a great debt to Walter Hayes because he was responsible for bringing Formula One Car Making to Britain. As a Executive of Ford of Britain, he decided to invest 100,000 pounds in a Formula One Engine, designed and built in Northhampton, arguing it would bring prestige for the company, and Britain. The particular engine Ford of Britain designed, won 150 races in the 1970's and 1980's.In 1979, Queen Elizabeth bestowed to Walter,Order Of Commander of The British Empire, for his contributions to British trade and industry. Walter was survived by his wife Elizabeth, who he had celebrated recently their Golden Anniversary, and two sons and one daughter.Walter was the one who arranged with Albert Broccoli of James Bond fame all the cars for James Bond and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang movies. He died of Lung Cancer.
