Winston was born February 8, 1924 on the home place on Snokomo Road in rural Paxico, Kansas, the son of George and Vivian Johnson Barthuly. He attended local schools and in 1941 graduated from Paxico High School. Winston served in the United States Army during WWII. He spent 23 months in the Indo-China theatre with the 745 Railway Operating Battalion.
Winston returned home from his military service and began farming the family farm. He and his family operated a Grade A Dairy along with beef cattle. He ran the farm and dairy operation until his health failed. He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in McFarland and held several offices there. Winston was a member of the Wabaunsee County Farm Bureau, had served on the Newbury Township Board, and the ASC Committee. He also was a board member and custodian for the Bethlehem Cemetery and a past member of the American Legion.
Winston married Laura Gnadt on March 28, 1948 at Trinity Lutheran Church in McFarland. On their 50th wedding anniversary, Winston and Laura celebrated by driving the same 1946 Chevy pickup they drove on their honeymoon. She survives at their home.
He is also survived by a daughter, Eileen Bahner and her husband, Robert, Overland Park; two sons, Gerald Barthuly and his wife, Carolyn, Paxico, David Barthuly and his wife, Kaye, Winfield; two sisters, Eloise Bolton and her husband, Rolland, Arvada, Colorado and Marleen Bonar and her husband, Joe, Colorado Springs, Colorado; six grandchildren, Amanda Dunn, Anissa Christensen, Martha Molz, Jared Barthuly, Loretta Barthuly, Cody Barthuly and two great-grandchildren, Adam and Laura Dunn.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, September, 11, 2009 at Trinity Lutheran Church in McFarland, Kansas. Reverend Ron Rather will be officiating. Burial and military honors will be in Bethlehem Cemetery south east of Paxico.
