Dorothy Inez Buckalew Bailey, 86, of Goldtown went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, January 16, 2011, following an extended illness.

She was born November 19, 1924, in Charleston and was a daughter of the late Wes and Dorothy Sayre Buckalew of Goldtown.

Dorothy graduated from Ripley High School in 1941 at 16 years of age. She graduated from Morris Harvey College, now the University of Charleston, served her country in WW II as a nurse cadet and went on to obtain her nursing degree. That launched a nursing career that spanned work at McMillan and Staats hospitals in Charleston, the Thomas Memorial Hospital ER and surgery in South Charleston and a stint as head surgical nurse at Jackson General Hospital in Ripley. She also worked for Drs. Roy and Jim Kessel at the Kessel Clinic, Dr. Morad at Jackson General and Drs. Georgiv and George Grubb in the OB/GYN clinic. She was also personal care nurse for Lady Mam Vail.

She was known for her kindness, generosity and sweet gentle spirit. Known as a local philanthropist in her community, she gave respite and nursing care to neighbors and friends when needed. Dorothy was also a 4-H leader and started the first 4-H club in Goldtown that included members Kathy Fisher Howerton, Tommy and Sherry Boggess, Tim Fisher, Robert Johnson and Rhonda Hissom Johnson, Terry, Lynn and Christopher Mountain Clendenin.

She was a lifelong member of Fisher Memorial Church, Goldtown, the Ripley Alumni Association and Daughters of the American Revolution. She volunteered for The Salvation Army and Red Cross and was a freelance writer for the Jackson Herald and Star News newspapers.

She also met many celebrities in her life including Billy Graham, Oliver North, Earl Hamner and Will Geer.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Randall Bailey; brothers, Marshall Buckalew and Floyd Buckalew; sister, Losha Jane Withrow; granddaughter, Melissa Jane Poling; nephews, Dick, Billy and Otmer Withrow, David Lee Bailey and Dean Collins; niece, Barbara Eddy; and sisters-in-law, Eula Buckalew, Mary Buckalew and Irene Buckalew.

Surviving: daughters; Jane Bailey and Sandra Lee Summers; son-in-law, Ralph Summers; grandchildren, Ben Randall Poling and his wife, Amber, Adam Stephen Poling, Kayla Raines and Claire Marie Summers; great-granddaughter, Annabelle Jane Poling; brothers, Harry Buckalew and Lt. Col. Jack Buckalew (retired); brother-in-law, Dave Bailey; and sister-in-law, Dottie Hughes.

She will also be sorely missed by her many nieces and nephews: Virginia and Bud Buchnerr, Delores and David Broome, Johnny and Barbara Withrow, Frank Eddy, Mary Jane Withrow, Mary Withrow, Robert and Jean Buckalew, Rebecca and Dwayne England, Ronnie and Carol Buckalew, Jimmy and Karen Buckalew, Marsha Jean Drisdol, Bob Buckalew, Kelly Buckalew, Ken Buckalew, Rick and Mary Collins, Sue and Bob Furr, Anita McIntyre, Don and Sharon Hughes, Glen Hughes, Mike and Lisa Collins and Steve Collins.

The family wishes to thank those who helped in so many ways over the years, including Vicky Burgess, Becky England, Virginia Buchner, Sue and John Paul Boggess, Delores Ransom, Glen Miller, Jo Chenoweth, David and Dayton Smith, Jordan Smith, Pastor Neal, Jack Buckalew, Harry Buckalew, Delores Broom, Johnny and Barbara Withrow, Ben and Amber Poling, Adam Poling and Kayla Raines.

Special thanks go to home care providers, David Stump and Brooke Rosier, Hospice and Gentiva. Special thanks also go to all the staff at Cedar Ridge Nursing Home, Thomas Memorial Hospital, CAMC Memorial and General hospitals, and Drs. Neville, Gandee, Jarrell and Kinder.

Funeral services are set for noon Saturday, January 22, at Fisher Memorial Church, Goldtown, with interment in the Sayre-Buckalew Cemetery.

A reception will follow the service at the church.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.
