Birth: 1700
Death: 1788

Artist and letter-writer, who has left us six volumes of 'Autobiography and Letters' describing polite society life in 18th century England, as well as creating paper collages now on display in the British Museum. She was born in Wiltshire and married in her teens to a wealthy Cornish landowner, Alex Pendarves. She was widowed after a few years and married the Irish religious figure Patrick Delany in 1743 after a long friendship. After being widowed again at the age of 68 she was given a cottage at Windsor by her friends George III and his queen Charlotte. An acquaintance during her life of virtually everyone worth knowing, including political figures such as Edmund Burke and the writers Jonathan Swift and Fanny Burney, she was a popular figure into her old age, and her written work is a valuable asset for Georgian historians.
