Birth: 1650
Death: 1726

Theologian and critic. Born in Cambridgeshire, he was educated at Cambridge University. he was a supporter of James II and after that king's deposition he wrote a series of articles questioning the legality of his replacement by William and Mary. In 1713 he was consecrated a Non-juror bishop. Disgusted by the bawdiness of the theatre of his time, he wrote the tract 'Short View of the Immorality and Profaneness of the English Stage' in 1698, paying particular attention to the work of Congreve and Vanbrugh. The churchyard in which he was buried became popular as a burial ground for Catholics and other opponents of the new monarchial order.
