Oliver was the son of Asa, member of the singing trio of brothers that founded the town of Hutchinson, MN, and Elizabeth (Chace). Being from a singing family, Oliver found himself a traveling minstrel also. The entire family spent summers at the farmstead in Hutchinson and the rest of the year at engagements.
Things changed when his brother Fred died in an accident on the farmstead. Shortly after, mother Elizabeth became ill and stopped travelling also. In 1875 Oliver joined his father in a tour of New England that lasted four years. From there the two went to Leadville, CO, built and ran a hotel for two years. By 1884, Oliver's father had returned to Hutchinson, MN and died.
However, Oliver and found his way to New York City! He formed the group Hutchinson Young Folks and the travelling group was alive again. By 1881, he returned to the family homestead and bought out druggist Isaac Kouwe in 1882 and the other partner, E F Ridout within the following few years. He was content to serve the namesake community as the druggist for the remainder of his years.
Along the way, Oliver married Miss Nelly Drew of Portland, ME. They had three children (as of source publishing in 1888):
