Russell was born On 19 Jul 1918 in the small farming community in Eastern Oregon of Flora to Owen and Nora PARKER COLE CLONINGER. They later moved to Asotin, WA and then to Avery, Idaho where dad started school. He graduated from St. Maries H.S. in St. Maries, ID. (When dad was stationed in St. Maries with the US Forest Service from 1955 to 1959, I used the same books and desk he used 18 years earlier!)
Dad graduated from the University of Idaho with a Forestry degree in 1941. then entered the US Navy, serving 3 years in the Pacific during WW II, obtained the rank of Lieutenant JG before returning to his main love in the Forest Service. Northern Idaho and Western Montana was his playground for many years until the big boys called him for service in Washington D.C. in 1962. He remained there until his retirement in 1974. Russ and Betty then packed up all their goodies and moved back to Montana buying a place on Flathead Lake. Traveling around the US in their motor home was the way of life they enjoyed. Upon returning from a trip to Mexico in 1979, dad had a massive heart attack while camped in Oregon enroute back to Montana. Mom, my sis & I brought him back to Montana and buried him overlooking his beloved Flathead Lake. In 2012, mom finally joined him in the Big Sky Country!
