Roger W. Preston, Sr. passed away on March 20, 2011, in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. Mr. Preston, a resident of Henderson Harbor, NY, was born on April 7, 1921, in Caledonia, NY; the son of Clarence and Livonia Pierce Preston. He was married to Grace DeCamp on August 28, 1943.
He is survived by his loving wife Grace, sons, Roger Jr. (Diana) of Margate, Fl and Richard (Peggy) of Peoria, AZ, grandchildren, Jeremy (Casey) and Christopher (Rebecca), great-grandchildren, Grace, Kate, Collin and Reese. Other survivors include his sister, Ruth (Robert) White of Cary, NC and brother, James (Gretta) Preston of Hector, NY. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is a graduate of East Pembroke High School, where he was valedictorian. Mr. Preston joined the U.S. Navy in 1944, where he served in the South Pacific on an LSM, until his discharge in 1946 as a Quartermaster 3rd class. He graduated from Cornell University in 1949 with a B.S. degree from the College of Agriculture. After spending many years in the field of education, Mr. Preston retired from the North Syracuse Central School system as a Dean at Cicero High School. As 50 plus year members of the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star, Roger and Grace were very active with their many friends. Upon retirement, they traveled extensively from coast to coast in their motorhome, acquiring friends from Canada to California.
His family will hold a Celebration of Life Memorial Service at 1:00 PM on July 17, 2011, at Henderson Community Hall, in Henderson, NY 13650.
Private internment will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Angelman Syndrome Foundation (www.angelman.org/teamcollin) in honor of Roger's great-grandson, Collin Preston, or to a charity of your choice.
